I am trying very hard not to give into the temptation to listen to the various sound clips from the trailer that have been floating around as of late. (I admit that I did break down in regards to the Obi-Wan line, circumventing my computer's infamous technological issues by burning the file to a CD and listening to it that way). I have to laugh at myself, though, because as someone who's been heavily spoiled on images and plot points, I'm oddly skittish about any spoilers to do with sound. Perhaps this is not so strange, however, as a great film score has the potential to completely carry me away emotionally, and good sound effects can subtly ground the images we see flickering on the screen in a deeper sense of believability. (Appropriately, my interest in the processes of film sound was first piqued by watching Ben Burtt tapping on high-tension wires in an early 'Making of' Star Wars documentary). Because of these traits and the added dimension they add to the experience of viewing a film, Sith's soundtrack is perhaps the one thing I definitely wish to wait on.
I am particularly looking forward to hearing Episode III Anakin speak for the first time, as I'm curious to hear how Hayden's vocal performance will reflect an older, more confident, and progressively darker character. Ian McDiarmid and Ewan McGregor will also deliver wonderful performances in this film, especially as the stakes get higher and higher, so I'm very much anticipating hearing them as well.
Although I've no interest in watching the antics of a bunch of beautiful people in SoCal trying to get it on with each other, I am pleased with the timing of the trailer premiere. If our plans work out the way we hope, I will be in persephones_rev's part of the state that evening, and we will be able to watch it together. Fangirlism and geekiness will abound, I assure you. :D

Wow. Even a cursory glance at my friendslist shows that there's been a tremendous amount of great new images and news this past week. Unfortunately offline life has been throwing me a number of curve balls lately, and I haven't had much time or energy to keep up. Hopefully the stresses will ease up over the next week and I'll be able to rejoin you all. :D Hope all are well!

Woo-hoo! Going to go see the OT on the big screen tonight. :D I actually saw the OT at the same theater back in 1989 with a really fun, enthusiastic crowd; hopefully it'll be a similar experience tonight. Now if I can just figure out a way to keep the SO from overdosing on popcorn... ¬_¬

In spite of the fact that it's my mother's favorite movie and one of the great classic films of the last century, I still haven't managed to watch Ben-Hur from beginning to end. I knew that the pod race from Phantom Menace was a direct homage to the chariot race in William Wyler's epic, but other than that I wasn't really aware of its possible influence on Lucas and the Star Wars saga. When my mom was watching it yesterday, however, one of the recurring themes of the film's score recalled for me John William's Imperial March, and my interest was piqued. I asked her to tell me basically what the film was about, and from her synopsis a few similar patterns and motifs began to emerge: an imperial official charged with stamping out an uprising, who then attempts to use his personal relationship with a local leader to try and restore order to the area, a character freed from slavery because of a selfless act of bravery, who is later incited to rage and revenge because of misfortune that has befallen his mother and sister, and the overarching themes of anger, hate, thirst for vengeance and finally compassion and redemption. Of course, one of Lucas' biggest talents is his ability to craft not only a story but an entire new world based on myriad cultural sources, but I still found some of the commonalities between his tale and that of Ben-Hur intriguing. I just may have to actually watch the darn thing now. ;)
